  12. This is the first public release of the "DISview" reference 
  13. documentation package for the KA9Q Network Operating System,
  14. (NET), as supplied by Demon Internet Ltd, the UK's number one 
  15. dial-up Internet Service Provider.
  16.  
  17. "DISview" is a complete reference work that describes all of the 
  18. KA9Q NET commands to be found in Demon's DIS216C.EXE release. 
  19.  
  20. "DISview" contains around 90 files, including:
  21.  
  22. ##  a handy one-stop "Command Set Reference Guide", containing
  23.     full command syntax and default parameter values for every 
  24.     NET command.
  25.  
  26. ##  a separate documentation file for each NET command, 
  27.     describing the functions of the command and its parameters, 
  28.     together with at least one example of how to use it. 
  29.  
  30. ##  documentation describing how to set up some of the less 
  31.     well-known facilities of NET (such as the built-in DNS
  32.     name server, dial-up scripts and IP address filtering for 
  33.     firewalls).
  34.  
  35. ##  detailed documentation on setting up the mail alias files,
  36.     the mailkill file and the ftpusers file (a source of much 
  37.     confusion to beginners).
  38.  
  39. ##  a "NOSintro-to-Demon Conversion Guide", covering the
  40.     differences between the packet radio implementations of KA9Q
  41.     (as described in "NOSintro") and Demon's implementation.
  42.     ("NOSintro" is a fully illustrated 356-page book for
  43.     beginners, explaining in detail how to configure and run 
  44.     KA9Q -- available from Demon).
  45.  
  46. ##  miscellaneous reference documentation -- for example, the
  47.     ASCII character set, Demon's telephone numbers, list of
  48.     Demon FAQs, the NET directory tree.

  50. ##  a copy of Clockwork "VIEW", a public domain file viewer.
  51.     "VIEW" is a TSR that lets you read the "DISview" text files,
  52.     giving instant help whilst on-line to Demon.

  55. Much effort has gone into ensuring consistency throughout 
  56. "DISview". Terms like "nodename", "hostname", "domain name",
  57. "interface", "IO address" and "vector" are explicitly defined
  58. and used consistently, as are forward slashes and backslashes.
  59. These measures hopefully eliminate much of the confusion that 
  60. exists in some other documentation.

  62. All "DISview" documentation files are in plain ASCII, and may be
  63. printed directly by DOS without any formatting.

  68. Where to find "DISview"

  70. "DISview" is obtainable by FTP from Demon's FTP server 
  71. (ftp.demon.co.uk), in directory /pub/disview. Look for the files
  72. disview.txt and disvw518.zip.

  77. How to install "DISview"
  78. ------------------------
  79. To install "DISview", first create a new subdirectory for it. As
  80. a suggestion, if the Demon root directory is C:\DEMON, then 
  81. create C:\DEMON\DISVIEW. "DISview" requires less than 1MB of 
  82. disk.

  84. Now download disvw518.zip into this directory and unzip it.

  86. Finally, read the unzipped file !!readme.1st to find out how to 
  87. complete the installation.
